Climate-change skeptic has 'turnaround' WORLD NEWS ...

News_World news_News_latest news_WNT+News_Worldnewstomorrow_worlnewstomottow.com

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW BERKELEY, Calif, ? Global warming is real and is caused ?almost entirely? by people, a University of California physicist and ?converted? climate change skeptic says.

?Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming,? UC Berkeley astrophysics Professor Richard A. Muller wrote in an opinion piece in The New York Times.

?Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I?m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause,? he wrote.

?The average temperature of the Earth?s land has risen by 2 1/2 degrees Fahrenheit over the past 250 years, including an increase of 1 1/2 degrees over the most recent 50 years,? wrote Muller, who founded the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project to debunk unsupported global-warming claims.

?Moreover, it appears likely that essentially all of this increase results from the human emission of greenhouse gases.?

He said he and his colleagues ?were not expecting this, but as scientists, it is our duty to let the evidence change our minds.?

He called his new stance ?a total turnaround.?

His research was funded with $150,000 from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, which, along with its libertarian petrochemical billionaire founder, has historically backed groups that deny climate change.

The research also received $100,000 from the Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research, created by Bill Gates.

Koch foundation spokeswoman Tonya Mullins told the Los Angeles Times in an e-mail her foundation?s support had no bearing on the research results.

?Our grants are designed to promote independent research; as such, recipients hold full control over their findings,? she wrote. ?In this support, we strive to benefit society by promoting discovery and informing public policy.?

The Gates fund had no immediate comment.

Muller?s team gathered and merged a collection of 14.4 million land temperature observations from 44,455 sites around the world dating from 1753. Previous data from NASA, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other sources went back only to the mid-1800s and used a fifth as many weather station records.

Muller said his team?s analysis suggested land temperatures would rise another 1.5 degrees in the next 50 years, but if China continues to use coal at its current rate, the warming could occur in less than 20 years.

Muller?s peer-reviewed research results were posted on the BerkeleyEarth.org Web site Sunday night. They are to be published by the Journal of Geophysical Research.

Michael E. Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University ? who has faced hostility from climate skeptics for his ?hockey stick? graph showing a rapid rise in 20th century temperatures ? said on Facebook he found ?a certain ironic satisfaction in seeing a study funded by the Koch brothers ? the greatest funders of climate-change denial and disinformation on the planet ? demonstrate what scientists have known with some degree of confidence for nearly two decades: that the globe is indeed warming, and that this warming can only be explained by human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations.

?I applaud Muller and his colleagues for acting as any good scientists would, following where their analyses led them, without regard for the possible political repercussions (they are of course almost certain to be attacked by climate change deniers for their findings),? he wrote.

Encouragement from 'The Ugly Duckling'

A Christian Science perspective.

By Doug Brown / July 29, 2012

Over the years I have always had a fascination with fairy tales. They contain wonderful insights that we carry well into adulthood; and many times, universal truths are taught by the animal characters in these fairy tales.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

I particularly like ?The Ugly Duckling,? by Hans Christian Andersen. Our star character is a duckling whose appearance is so out of place among his family that he is labeled The Ugly One. Deep down in his little duckling heart he has the same needs for love and acceptance as his brother and sister ducks, but it is not to be. He is different ? he is ugly.

One day he sees a flock of beautiful white birds on a pond. Something deep inside impels him to approach these birds, these beautiful white swans. As he approaches, he catches sight of his reflection in the water ? why, he is one of them! He is a beautiful white swan. Everyone had it wrong: he was not a duck, nor was he ugly. It was a case of mistaken identity.

Over 2,000 years ago Jesus asked a question along similar lines, which continues to reverberate even today. The question was asked in two different ways. First, ?Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?? His disciples? answer was to report rumors of what others said. He asked again: ?But whom say ye that I am?? This time his disciple Peter came forth with a validation of Jesus? office: ?Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God? (Matthew 16:13-16).

The integrity of any testimony is based on two factors: the credibility of the testimony and the credentials of the witness. Peter?s understanding was the rock upon which Jesus would build his church, and it satisfies both criteria as reliable and authentic.

Sadly, Jesus? best intentions were misinterpreted and even intentionally distorted. Yet he never forgot his mission, never turned back or compromised his message. The biographies of Mary Baker Eddy reveal a similar kind of resistance to her message, but her teachings and practice followed the Master ? always taking the way of divine Love to bless, restore, and reform. She was not deterred when her efforts were misrepresented by mere opinion gone wrong; she knew that conviction based on truth would vindicate the Christianity of her teachings.

We shouldn?t be discouraged if our prayers or our healing work is misrepresented; rather, we should recognize that opinion is baseless, but conviction blesses. What matters is our commitment to reflecting God?s allness in our daily living. Jesus exhorted his students: ?Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils? (Matthew 10:8). And Mrs. Eddy placed a similarly high premium on proof and demonstration. She encouraged her students to rely totally upon those principles in their lives. She wrote, ?I make strong demands on love, call for active witnesses to prove it, and noble sacrifices and grand achievements as its results? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 250).

Christian Science teaches us of our inseparability from God, divine Mind, our origin and the source of our completeness. Mrs. Eddy writes, ?Man is God?s reflection, needing no cultivation, but ever beautiful and complete? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 527).

When the duckling made the connection with the other swans through his reflection, it allowed him to cross over the invisible barrier to the companionship he so longed for. And when we make the connection to the divinity in our reflection, we cross the invisible barriers to what we long for. It is this decision to take action, directed by inspiration, that validates and sustains our course heavenward.

Her Favourite Food: Smithy's Restaurant & Wine Bar

Where:??King's Cross

Cuisine:? Modern European

This has to be King?s Cross?s best kept secret, and a very good one at that.
Smithy?s is in the centre of London but has an intimate feel of a local about it. Only those lucky enough to be in the know wine and dine here and it?s obvious they appreciate the place.

As a family run business, Smithy?s has great character about it, but this also stems from the rich history of the place. Over a hundred years ago the building was home to the magnificent shire horses that used to pull the omnibuses on London's streets. Now it sits behind a small non discrete black door down a cobbled secret side street.

Many of the original features have been kept and they add to the authenticity of the restaurant including a cobbled floor.

With the addition of fairy lights and tables at different levels and intimate corners, Smithy?s has a warm and convivial atmosphere.

Would I want Seconds?

The menu here changes here almost daily and it is designed according to availability of local produce and seasonal variations. As a result there is always something new to try and so always a reason to come back for seconds.

But in addition to the food there is also a large variety of carefully selected wines and ale on offer. In this way Smithy?s caters for a variety of needs from a quick drink or a three-course meal.

Could I afford Seconds?

The cheapest time to eat here is at Lunch. Smithy?s offer a ?Quick Lunch? option between 12pm-3pm were the main course cost ?8.50. The menu is varied so there will be something for vegetarians as well as meat eaters. But come the dinner slot and the prices rise. A main course will cost an average of ?16 -?20 which is expensive for the type of food on offer.

As a result Smithy?s is an affordable and lovely place for a nice atmospheric lunch, and an ideal unique and buzzing bar for evening drinks.

Overall:

3/5

In the evenings Smithy?s becomes more a bar than a restaurant, which is shame because it has the potential to be a very distinctive and successful venue for evening dinning. However I would still recommend a visit, even if it is just for a drink to soak up the atmosphere.

Romney can expect warm Israeli reception

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday ? and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments ? and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. Neither the Romney nor Abbas camps would explain why a meeting with Abbas was not on the agenda.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

Willard says he did nothing to warrant arrest

(AP) ? Fred Willard said his recent lewd conduct arrest at an adult movie theater was "very embarrassing" but insisted he did nothing wrong.

"It's the last time I'm going to listen to my wife when she says, 'Why don't you go and see a movie?'" Willard said during an appearance Thursday on Jimmy Fallon's NBC show "Late Night."

The 72-year-old actor and Fallon cracked racy jokes about possible titles for the movie that might have been playing when Willard was arrested July 18 during a routine check by police at the Hollywood-area theater.

Then the conversation turned serious for Willard, whose credits include the movie "Best in Show" and guest roles on "Modern Family" and other TV shows.

"Fred, I know this must be a tough time," host Fallon asked.

"It's very embarrassing. It's as embarrassing as hell," Willard replied. "But let me say this: Nothing happened. I did nothing wrong. Everything is being sorted out as we speak."

He has great respect for the police, Willard added, "but if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, everything seems suspicious."

He's tried to laugh it off but the incident is "very painful," said Willard, who was fired as narrator of the new PBS series "Market Warriors" immediately after his arrest.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's office determined that Willard's case was eligible for a diversion program that will keep him from being formally charged with lewd conduct if he completes the required courses. Willard will pay $380 for the program.

Talk shows can be useful for celebrity efforts at damage control. In 1995, Hugh Grant visited Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight" after being arrested with a prostitute on Hollywood's Sunset Strip.

Fallon was sympathetic to Willard.

"You're a good man. ... You're one of my favorites," Fallon said, then needled him with, "You can come to our show and do whatever the heck you want, except for certain things."

Willard was nominated four times for Emmys for guest roles on "Modern Family" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." In Pixar's 2008 hit "WALL-E," he voiced the character of Shelby Forthright, the CEO of a ubiquitous big-box chain called Buy'n'Large.

In addition to "Best in Show," Willard has also appeared in other Christopher Guest mockumentary films, including "This is Spinal Tap" and "Waiting for Guffman."

Willard is hosting "Trust Us With Your Life," an improv series airing this summer on ABC.

Organizers display SKorea flag instead of NKorea

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? London Olympic organizers mistakenly displayed the South Korean flag on a jumbo screen instead of North Korea's before a women's soccer match Wednesday, prompting the North Koreans to refuse to take the field for nearly an hour.

The flag flap began during player introductions when a North Korean player was introduced along with a shot of the South Korean flag.

The match against Colombia was delayed for more than an hour, and organizers apologized for the error.

"Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly that is a mistake," organizers said. "We will apologize to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

The statement, however, included another gaffe: It failed to refer to the countries by their official Olympic names, causing organizers to reissue the statement using "Republic of Korea" and "Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

Commenting on the flap, the International Olympic Committee pointed to London officials.

"It's a matter for the organizers," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

North Korea and South Korea are bitter rivals. The flag mix-up comes amid high tension on the Korean Peninsula following a North Korean long-range rocket launch in April and repeated threats by Pyongyang to attack the South. Seoul and the U.S. have called the launch a cover for a test of banned long-range missile technology. North Korea says the rocket, which broke apart shortly after liftoff, was meant to put a satellite into orbit.

Wednesday's match started 1 hour, 5 minutes late. Fans were confused at first, then turned to doing the wave and finally started booing as they became increasingly restless.

An announcement was eventually made over the public address system about 20 minutes after the scheduled 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT; 2:45 p.m. EDT) kick off, apologizing for the delay and saying it "was due to an issue behind the scenes. We're trying to resolve it and we'll keep you updated."

To pass more time, music was pumped from the speakers. Players from both teams finally emerged onto the field about 40 minutes after the match was supposed to begin. The players warmed up again for 10 minutes before they returned inside the tunnel to be led out again for the national anthems.

Flag controversies aren't new at the Olympics. At the 1992 Barcelona Games, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley from the Dream Team draped U.S. flags over their shoulders to hide a rival sponsor's logo on their jackets when they received their gold medals.

At the 2010 Vancouver Games, the Australians displayed a flag with a boxing kangaroo ? the mascot for the country's team ? in the athletes village, despite an International Olympic Committee rule that usually only permits official national flags to be displayed. The IOC eventually relented.

In 2000, sprinter Cathy Freeman caused a stir when she took a victory lap after winning the 400-meter final at the Sydney Games draped in the Aboriginal flag, which was not recognized as an official national flag by the IOC.

Also in 2000, North and South Korean athletes marched together at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics under the unified Korea flag, sparking a standing ovation. But with relations deteriorating in the years since, each country insists on a separate flag.

Last month, there was another mix-up in Britain. British field hockey officials apologized to the South African women's team for playing the apartheid-era national anthem before one of its matches at the London Cup, a warm-up event for the Olympics.

The event's organizer, Great Britain Hockey, said it was an administrative mistake and offered a "full and unreserved apology."

Trigger that increase the risk of skin cancer | Melanoma

Posted in skin on 25th July 2012 skin cancer

skin cancer

Always keep the health of your skin early on. In fact, research by the Mayo Clinic from 1970 to 2009 showed the number of cases of skin cancer continues to increase significantly each year.

Especially, among young women. Skin cancer usually can be seen from some of the symptoms or signs that exist on the skin. Like a new mole or a mole changes shape.

It was not just happen. There are special reasons to be a trigger and increase the risk of skin cancer.

- Medical history
If the mother, father or brother had skin cancer or melanoma, your risk of skin cancer on average 50 percent larger than others. Then, if the grandfather, grandmother, cousin or distant relative also diagnosed with skin cancer then your risk of suffering also remains more than the average of others. However, not much if your immediate family who suffer from skin cancer.

- Sunburn
If you have experienced skin burns due to severe enough sunlight in childhood or adolescence at once to two times, it can increase the risk of developing melanoma later in life. Actually, five times the skin you?ve ever experienced mild burned by the sun also can double the risk of skin cancer.

- Pale skin and eye colors are bright

Personal Productivity: 3 Time Allocation Tools For The Mission ...

When it comes down to personal productivity, handling your time and energy well is a real concern. Yet, for social and mission-driven entrepreneurs like you, the ?hard-core? discipline of a Stephen Covey 1-2-3 planning system may not work. For you, creative flow, creating new ideas, being spontaneous must be of the same importance as checking off your-to-do list.

In this article, I?ll teach a bit more of a creative, intuitive process that may keep you energized and galvanized for the long run.

First, we?ll address what resource management really means. It implies that:

a) you've got to change your calendar from a slave driver to your no.1 reason keeper
b) that you will need to focus on what?s most determined for you the leader.

To form a calendar that let?s you get tons done which helps you breathe inspiration, the way to do that's by creating different categories on your calendar (I love doing that with Google calendar and then share each one of them with my office manager so she will take on my scheduling).

Here is a list of items that I would recommend you add to your calendar. By the way, I add them at a rather random time and add the word [Floater] to the task. This way I'm aware That I have some time planned for them but I will move them around to accommodate other engagements since they aren't time-dependent:

1. Creative time bites

These are weekly or even twice weekly time slots of several hours that are open to be used as you think fit. Just scheduling this, will give you a feeling of liberty and creative surge, I promise.

2. Email time slots

One of the largest wastes of our generation is answering electronic messages twenty four seven as quickly as they come in. Here's what I?d recommend: Create 2 half-hour slots and one 1-hour slot. Use the half hour slots to go thru your email, answer? really quick? ones immediately and place the ?task-heavy? ones into a ?to-do? folder. Now you have masses of time on your 1-hour slot to work down the mails that mean you have to perform a job. Result: at the day's close, your mail is empty.

3. Break slots

Yes, for entrepreneurs who depend on their intuitive decision-making process, you want regular breaks to recharge and reconnect . The illusion that you do not have time for breaks (which you share with many others ), is the most important reason why we think we are productive when we?re just truly, only busy.

Ok, I could go on except for now, just add those 3 ?floaters? to your day and week, and exult in the confidence, increased creativity and smoother work flow you gain from it .

Now to concentrating on what?s really vital for you. Yes, you are at a place now where you don't have to do all the tasks yourself any longer. You've a team to support your business expansion, yet, on occasions you find yourself still executing on jobs that may be done by somebody on your team.

The solution: Every Sunday evening, prepare your calendar for the week. Create your ?floaters? and then judge all of your others tasks on your job list. Make sure that ONLY you can work on them. Be rigorous. If you know you could train someone else, discipline yourself to do that. Yes, it may cost a bit more time at this time but then you don't ever have to do it again. Your skills are unique, identify the ones that bring ideas, impact and income to your business, delegate everything else.

In the week, you will find that you will get tempted to put out fires that come to you from all angles. Again, stop, breath, ask if it is most purposeful for you to become involved in that activity. If not, either delegate now or create a task in your project-management tool which will remind you to train somebody next time. You owe it to the planet , your team and you to be thorough with your purpose.

Potential arthritis drug might also aid bone growth

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have taken for decades a drug that also resulted in unwanted bone loss. But a researcher at Georgia Health Sciences University is studying a protein that could not only treat the disease but aid in bone growth.

Dr. Nianlan Yang, a post-doctoral fellow at GHSU, was recently awarded a two-year, $100,000 fellowship grant by the Arthritis Foundation. She is studying a component from a class of drugs called glucocorticoids, which includes the steroid prednisone.

The drugs have been used for many years to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis even though how exactly they work in the body is not well known, Yang said. The drugs have anti-inflammatory effects which are beneficial but can also have serious side effects, such as bone or muscle weakness or metabolic impacts that can bring on diabetes, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

The drug ?just works on too many things,? Yang said. ?It covers too much. So sometimes it will benefit you and sometimes it does some bad things to your body.?

The work began with just trying to understand the mechanisms of the drug.

?At first we?re just trying to figure out how glucocorticoid works,? Yang said. The research zeroed in on a protein called glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper that appeared to be the way the drug was inhibiting inflammation. By that inhibition, it was also promoting stem cells to become bone-forming cells and promote bone growth.

?This is really interesting because most people believe glucocorticoids cause bone loss,? Yang said.

Some of her work will be in a mouse specially bred to overexpress the inflammatory agent to see if the protein can block its effects but she would also like to create her own mouse model that overexpresses the GILZ protein. The goal is to continue to study the protein to find out what is causing the good effects, Yang said.

?We still need to find out which part can be used for drug development,? she said. ?From (lab) bench to bed, that?s always a long way to go.?

The protein or small molecule could offer a way to have a double beneficial effect for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

?We have to look at how this inflammation triggered bone loss,? Yang said. ?That?s why we?re interested in this small molecule because this small molecule can target both sides of this disease, inflammation and bone loss.?

More of the burning issues for NFL teams as they head into training camp

The chances of Eli Manning raising another Lombardi Trophy after the 2012 season seem unlikely given how lucky the Giants were all last season.

NFL TRAINING CAMPS ARE HERE! NFL TRAINING CAMPS ARE HERE!

The rookies are frantically thumbing through three-ring binders and the veterans will be filing in from today until the end of the week. Last week, we covered the first 16 teams ? and talked about what those teams might be talking about ? so let's get to the rest. Here we go:

Miami Dolphins
On July 28 ? just two days after Dolphins report to Nova Southeastern University ? Champions League winner Chelsea will face AC Milan in a soccer friendly at Sun Life Stadium, marking the only time you'll see the words "Champions," "winner" and "Sun Life" in the same sentence this year.

Since the QB depth chart is currently a series of stacked question marks, I expect a second straight year of big numbers from Reggie Bush. Last year Bush ? the guy who hadn't had a 100-yard rushing game since his rookie season ? broke the 100+ mark four times and, in Week 15, left 203 yards of cleat prints across Buffalo's defense.

Minnesota Vikings
It's safe, guys. You can finally start taking offseason phone calls from that Mississippi area code. Shh ? shh ? he's not coming back.

New England Patriots
The Patriots come into the season with the easiest schedule in the league, with a veteran team that features the fewest rookies (and the fewest undrafted free agents). They spent all but one of their seven draft picks on defensive players, hoping to improve a defense that was only out-sucked by Green Bay (Which you can only get away with when your offense averages 400+ yards and 32+ points per game. Sorry, Tampa.).

New Orleans Saints
Quarterback Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton had been together since both of them arrived in New Orleans in 2006. They collected a 62-34 regular-season record together, with four playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win. Payton has been grounded for the season so it'll be interesting to see how Brees fares and whether, by Week 6, he's morphed into a mini-Peyton, assuming more control of the offense. The rest of the team has to prepare for ? and endure ? ?a "Fresh Prince" style coaching swap: Aunt Vivian will be played by Aaron Kromer for the first six games, by Joe Vitt for the remainder of the season.

New York Giants
Yes, they won the Super Bowl and spent the offseason adding diamond-encrusted rings to their homeowners' insurance policies. But despite the confidence of The Littlest Manning and the pants-soiling speed of their pass rush, the Giants also had a lot of luck on their side, especially in the fourth quarter.

The plus side: They collected a record-tying seven final-quarter comebacks.

The minus side: Their average margin of victory was a tight-fitting two points and they lost at least three games in the last fifteen minutes, once by allowing Charlie Whitehurst to lead Seattle to a 20-point 4th quarter and by letting Aaron Rodgers move the ball 80 yards in the final 58 seconds.

Shoved into a cardboard box and buried at least 10 feet below the minus side: Vince Young ? VINCE YOUNG ? orchestrated a game-winning drive, throwing the go-ahead TD to Riley Cooper. That catch makes up 50 percent of Cooper's career TDs.

Adding the toughest schedule in the league to the 29th ranked defense makes me think Tom Coughlin won't have the opportunity to use his one annual smile this year.

New York Jets
I like to think that when Tim Tebow selects his 12 disciples, he'll consider using Antonio Cromartie's kids.

Oakland Raiders
If the McFadden was a McDonald's menu item, it would only be available for 12 or 13 weeks a year.

Philadelphia Eagles
If they added a dessert called a McVick, it would be a turnover. (WORK WITH ME HERE.) Last season, Vick made an attempt to stay in the pocket, rather than race around Sonic the Hedgehog-style ? and he paid for it. Although he set career highs for both passing attempts and passing yards, he also through a career-worst 14 interceptions. Statistically, he also endured his worst game since December 2006, a Week 10 loss to Arizona where he had a Tebow-ish passer rating of 32.5.

Numbers aside, Vick needs to find a way to stay healthy this season because there's really no backup plan. After sending Vince Young to Buffalo, their next option at QB is either Mike Kafka (Career Stats: 11-16, 0 TD, 2 INT) or, um, seeing what that guy with the T-shirt cannon can do. (Career Stats: 50 percent cotton, 50 percent polyester).

Pittsburgh Steelers
Can we just talk about the Pirates for a sec? Because they're two games out of first in the NL Central and are actually a solid team, instead of the trash fire that they've been since 1992.

San Diego Chargers
A: The Nile, the Shenandoah, the Willamette and Philip.

Q: What are Rivers that run backwards?

San Francisco 49ers
Shh ? this year we're NOT going to replace Alex Smith's offensive coordinator during the offseason. Let's see what happens when he hears Greg Roman's voice FOR TWO SEASONS IN A ROW.

Seattle Seahawks
Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn and rookie Russell Wilson will all compete to see who hands the ball to Marshawn Lynch and, no joke, I think Wilson is the best option. We've seen what Jackson can('t) do and Flynn spent four seasons working on his clipboard arm in Green Bay (although he did get to start in Week 17, which is sort of like when you were eight and your dad would trade you seats so you could pull the car into the garage.) Wilson is athletic, a solid leader and he's going to be amazing in The Hobbit.

St. Louis Rams
The Rams are the perfect choice to send to London for that Week 8 Euro-exhibition game, mainly because the English crowd is used to watching football players who can't use their hands.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs haven't won a game since last October 16 and those ten straight losses (the ones where they were outscored by a combined 325-156) were pretty much the worst finale since "Lost." I've looked into the eye of this island and what I saw was terrible.

Tennessee Titans
When I noticed that I was legitimately intrigued by a Matt Hasselbeck vs. Jake Locker quarterback battle, I assumed that it was a side effect of taking expired medication. It wasn't. I AM intrigued.

Washington Redskins
No, Bob Kraft. RGIII wasn't the little robot in Star Wars.

Eye Makeup Adds SPF

New York Times:

Eye creams with SPF are standard fare -- the skin around the eyes, after all, is among the most delicate and wrinkle-prone on the body -- and now eye makeup is getting a boost of sun protection too. More and more concealers, and a few eye shadows, too, are claiming to ward off harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Fuqua School of Business Students Provide Free Consulting to Area ...

A special course at Duke University?s Fuqua School of Business lets students hone their consulting skills while helping local small businesses and nonprofit organizations, the school shared recently.

The Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum is not new ? in fact, over the past 30 years Fuqua students have helped more than 300 local companies, nonprofits and other organizations through the for-credit course. But for Triangle-area small businesses who want to take advantage of this opportunity, the time to apply is now. Applications will be accepted through August 31st.

Through the practicum, students have offered a wide range of assistance, ranging from improving accounting systems to providing financial analysis to developing IT and marketing strategies. Some students have even helped small firms expand their businesses overseas.

To be considered for the program, a firm or organization must have been in business for at least one year, have revenues exceeding $100,000 (with some exceptions for nonprofits), provide financial and operational data to the student consultants, meet with the students at least five times over the course of the consulting engagement and pay a $500 administrative fee if accepted into the program.

Last year, teams of Fuqua students worked with 16 organizations across a range of sectors including healthcare, education, information technology and retail. Participating students get to learn about the applying organizations, and teams are formed based on students? interests, experience and abilities.

Student teams begin their consulting projects in October, meeting with business owners and managers five or six times through April. A faculty member provides support to each team, meeting with the students regularly to review progress. Students sign a non-disclosure agreement before the engagement begins, and they complete the project with a formal written and oral presentation to the client.

Spain feels debt heat, Greece way off bailout terms

MADRID/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Spain paid the second highest yield on short-term debt since the birth of the euro at an auction on Tuesday, and EU officials said Greece had little hope of meeting the terms of its bailout, casting fresh doubt on its future in the euro zone.

Spain's increasingly desperate struggle to put its finances right has seen its borrowing costs soar to levels that are not manageable indefinitely, reflecting a growing belief that it will need a sovereign bailout that the euro zone can barely afford.

It has become the recent focus for investors, but Greece - where the sovereign debt crisis began - remains a powder keg. If Athens were to default or exit the euro zone, the knock-on effects could push Spain and even Italy over the edge.

With inspectors from the EU, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund returning to Greece to decide whether to keep it hooked up to a 130-billion-euro lifeline or let it go bust, three EU officials said they were likely to conclude Athens cannot repay what it owes, making a further debt restructuring necessary.

This time, the European Central Bank and euro zone governments would likely have to take a hit on some of the estimated 200 billion euros ($240 billion) of Greek government debt they own if Athens is to be put back on a sustainable footing.

But there is no willingness among member states or the ECB to take such dramatic action at this stage.

"Greece is hugely off track," one of the officials told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The debt-sustainability analysis will be pretty terrible."

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said Greece's economy could contract by more than 7 percent this year, pushing debt-cutting targets further out of reach, but he pledged to stay the course.

"There are certainly delays in this year's agreed programme, and we must quickly catch up," Samaras told party colleagues. "Let's not kid ourselves, there is still big waste in the public sector, and it must stop."

The Spanish Treasury sold the 3 billion euros of three- and six-month bills it was aiming to, though yields climbed; the six-month paper jumped to 3.691 percent from 3.237 percent last month.

"The most important takeaway from this auction is that Spain was able to get all its debt out the door," said Nicholas Spiro of Spiro Sovereign Strategies. "Still, in March, Spain was able to issue six-month debt at a yield of under 1 percent. Now it is paying 3.7 percent."

Spain had cushioned itself by securing well over half its annual debt needs in the first six months of the year when market conditions were more benign, but that advantage has evaporated as its funding needs for the rest of the year have grown.

On Friday, the government said it expected the economy to remain in recession well into next year, while the autonomous region of Valencia became the first to ask Madrid for aid to pay debt obligations it cannot meet. Others are expected to follow.

Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia, responsible for a fifth of the country's economic output, admitted it had financing needs to meet while its access to markets was shut, but had not decided yet whether to tap a state liquidity line.

BOND MARKET MESSAGE

On the secondary market, Spanish five-year government bond yields rose above 10-year yields for the first time since June 2001. Having to pay more to borrow shorter-term rather than longer-term is usually a sign that markets think the risk of a default or debt restructuring has increased.

"The spread between 5- and 10-years moved to negative today, which is a classic sign that the market thinks the current trends are unsustainable for Spain's fiscal dynamics," said Nick Stamenkovic, bond strategist at RIA Capital Markets.

The return investors demand to hold Spanish 10-year bonds is now at 7.6 percent, while the cost of insuring Spanish debt against default has also hit record highs.

Ten-year yields above 7 percent have proved to be a tipping point leading eventually to bailouts for other countries in the euro zone, though Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos insisted on Monday that Madrid would not need more aid.

The government has already asked for up to 100 billion euros to recapitalise the nation's banks, which have been battered by a four year economic downturn and a property crash.

The government has launched a fresh 65 billion euro package of tax rises and spending cuts designed to chip away at its debt mountain but it will also probably drive the economy deeper into recession.

The alarming spiral of Spain's debt costs has banished any hopes that a bailout of its banks, or a June EU summit that gave the euro zone's rescue funds a green light to intervene in the markets, has put the debt crisis into abeyance.

Spain and Italy have called for help to ward off market pressure. The ECB has cut interest rates but has shown marked reluctance to revive its bond-buying programme, the only mechanism that could lower borrowing costs at a stroke.

De Guindos and Wolfgang Schaeuble, Spain and Germany's Finance Ministers, called on Tuesday for a quick implementation of the decisions of the last European Union summit, particularly setting up a banking union with a single European supervisor.

They also said after meeting in Berlin that Spain's funding costs did not reflect the fundamentals of its economy and the sustainability of its debt.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said further aid for Spain could take the form of an increase in Europe's rescue fund or action by the ECB.

"I hope it will not be necessary to intervene again," he told France 2 television. "If we have to intervene, it could be an increase in the firewalls ... or interventions by the central bank."

The euro zone as a whole is now subsiding into recession.

Business surveys on Tuesday showed the currency area's private sector shrank for a sixth month in July, with the downturn that began in the euro zone's high debt nations now becoming entrenched in Germany and France.

Credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service lowered its outlook for Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg to negative from stable late on Monday, citing an increased chance that Greece could leave the euro zone.

It also warned Germany and the other 'AAA'-rated countries that they might have to increase support for Spain and Italy.

You may also have a family pet that is like a member of your family.? Have you thought about what happens to them if something happens to you?? It?s no longer a laughing stock who makes provision in Estate Planning for their animals.? The majority of pets left without such provision are generally taken to the pound.? In some states, they are euthanized within 72 hours.

Until recent history, the US almost always overturned pet trusts if contested because the law considered pets to be property and not entities legally entitled to receive an inheritance.? But that?s no longer the case in 38 states.

And that?s a positive trend in our country that is long overdue.? The first time a pet trust was upheld in Europe was in 1888, so it took us a while to begin catching up.

You don?t have to be ultra wealthy just to make provision for what happens to your pet(s) in your estate plan.? It?s common sense that you wouldn?t leave your beloved animals without any provision at all.

It?s estimated that it?s grown to somewhere between 12% and 27% who will include their pets in their estate planning.? The media has made some interesting revelations about pet owners who provided for care of their furry companions. A couple of examples are:

Dusty Springfield made provision for her cat, Nicholas, so that he was always fed imported baby food, slept in a bed lined with her night gown, and her songs would be played to Nicholas at nightly bedtimes.

Doris Duke, the sole heir of ?Buck? Duke (founded Duke University and American Tobacco Company) left $100,000 in a trust for her dog.

Natalie Schafer (Lovey on Gilligan?s Island) provided that her entire estate be used for the benefit of her dog.

These are stories that only someone who also has furry family members can appreciate and even come close to understanding, I think!

But you can also ? even if you don?t have the wealth of Oprah ? make provisions for your pets if they survive you.

Call me and let?s chat about it!? I?ll tell you the simple steps to take to ensure that your wishes are carried out in the way that you want and ensure that they are legally binding and permanent.
