With so much of the focus in the TV market being on smart features connecting sets to the internet, it's interesting to see a company focus on audio. The Bose Videowave diverges from the usual stable of social and programming apps for a more dedicated effort towards excellent surround sound right out of the box, and that, was music to our small space dwelling ears.

It's not surprising that a TV from Bose would have great sound, but what is surprising is just how full the sound is coming from such a relatively small package. We say relatively small because unlike other latest and greatest TVs on the market, the Bose VideoWave is not paper thin. We were skeptical when we first read about how this system could replace several speakers, but after this review period and hearing it in our home, we now understand what Bose meant.

When you look at the VideoWave it doesn't seem that much different from an ordinary 46" flat screen HDTV, it's only when you listen to it or look at it from the side, do you notice that something else is going on. As one would expect, the picture is clear and HD content looks great. What one doesn't expect, is just how full the room feels with sound whether you're watching a film or listening to music from your iPod.

When you purchase a VideoWave system you have the option of having it professionally installed ($4,499 with installation $4,249 without). After working with our schedule, Bose sent the install team to set up the VideoWave for the review period. The installers were professional and courteous and asked us questions about how we would be using the system. They also showed us how easy it was to add additional components to the system or remove others should our needs change. One of the highlights of the installation was the overview of the remote, which is hands-down the best remote control we've ever had the pleasure of using.

The remote fits well in your hand and is designed so that you can operate it without looking. We love the square touch zone, click-pad type path that you glide your finger over to make your selection. The VideoWave remote quickly replaced our other remotes and we only needed to bring out the Xbox or Wii controller when a game called for it. Unlike other multi-function all-in-one remotes, adding the ability to control other components did not add to the complexity of operating the remote. Using this remote made things easier and Bose should seriously considering going into the business of remote making because it is just that good.

The VideoWave was installed in our living room and while it's not the largest room (our whole apartment is under 600 sq feet) with our trusty TV it could be difficult at times to listen to music or watch TV over the AC. The VideoWave had no problem filling the room with sound and actually it filled the entire apartment quite nicely. The system came with a dock for an iPod or iPhone and we used that quite regularly to turn on some tunes while baking in the kitchen.

The remote offers a "video mute" option, which means when you're listening to audio from your iPod or iPhone, you can turn the video display off on the television so you can save electricity and just focus on the sound. Due to the excellent audio emanating from the VideoWave, we used the system more often in video mute mode than we did with the video on.

It was creepy at times just how much it would feel like the sound that we were hearing was coming from behind us or to the left or right. It was kind of amazing just how much it sounded like the speakers were not located where we knew they actually were. While for a true surround sound addict this sort of system probably won't do, it's great for those who want rich full sound but don't want to have multiple speakers in the room. If you can spare the extra depth needs that the unit has (6"), it's a no-brainer as the speakers are pretty much invisible.

Bottom Line: The VideoWave is perfect for people who want the best possible sound out of the smallest package with the least amount of fuss. It's a simple, elegant solution that's incredibly easy to use and will really add value to your space. If you have already substantially invested in your entertainment speakers than the VideoWave is not for you, but if you're in the market for solid sound and a 46" TV, then you would be remiss not to consider this piece of tech.

Pros: Easy to operate, excellent overall performance, small footprint considering the speaker integration which makes it great for apartments.

Cons: Very deep compared to other 46" HDTVs, price is higher than other TVs of the same size.

Men in Black: Alien Crisis smells like nothing more than a tie-in promotion. Both the video game and the movie launch this month, but if the trailers are any indicator?this might be a game you want to pass on. This action-adventure, following neither of our favorite agents but a new recruit named Peter Delacoeur, The game will be released for all the major consoles: PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii on May 22, 2012 with the movie following on May 25, 2012. But between the graphics and the $60 price tag, this just isn?t a high-caliber game. So if you?re expecting a game comparable to any of the recent releases, look elsewhere. It is rated TEEN for mild language, mild suggestive themes, and violence, but the game seems most appropriate for young teens. The violence is more suggestive than anything, because killing aliens is little more than aim, shoot, and then flashy colors erupting all over the screen. The presentation is just severely lacking. When you?re releasing it next to all these other games, it?s more disappointing than anything. We have high expectations nowadays with the release of high-quality, high-caliber games that indulge all the senses, but this Men in Black game definitely doesn?t meet those expectations.?

In the debut trailer, we?re given a rundown of the storyline for this game. The back story for the new recruit, Peter Delacoeur, is clich? and typical; a former ?master thief,? he brags about how he always gets what he wants, and that the fun is getting away with it. Once recruited into the clandestine alien killer group, he (or you, rather) is key in stopping an alien plot to steal an artifact that would control the world. At least that?s somewhat intriguing. The debut trailer ends with an alien?looking more like an overgrown plant?busting out from the street, and the graphics would only thrill a five-year-old. Peter Delacoeur tells us to ?get ready, it?s going to be one wild ride.? Right.

You can upgrade and have weapon combinations, though. In all actuality, the weapon system might be the best aspect of the game. The game includes all the weapons we know and love, like that little Noisy Cricket, but the trailers reveal that (besides a quick glimpse of Frank the Pug) the overlap between the movies and the game ends there. It?s sad because the Men in Black universe is very interesting and somewhat complicated, but between the graphics, clich? back story, and lame dialogue?Men in Black: Alien Crisis pales in comparison to the movies. It has the guns and the characters in black suits, and it has the aliens? but what it doesn?t have is satisfying game play. The way killing aliens is displayed isn?t nearly as satisfying as it is in the movies. We do get a decent amount of different kinds of aliens?big ones, small ones, scary ones?but besides the weapons and the aliens, this game?s got nothing and you?d be better off just watching the movie. ?

Aflatoxin contaminated groundnuts

One year, groundnut farmers in sub-Saharan Africa were enjoying harvests and exports that allowed them to feed and educate their children, and the next, the door to the international market was slammed shut. The culprit? Aflatoxin.

Aflatoxins?are potent toxins that are produced by certain types of fungi. Naturally occurring and potentially deadly, they infest crops such as groundnuts (peanuts), sorghum, cassava and maize. When ingested, aflatoxins can result in disease anywhere in the body, but are most commonly known for causing acute or chronic liver disease and liver cancer. More than five billion people in the developing world are exposed to aflatoxins by unknowingly consuming contaminated foods.

Although countries across sub-Saharan Africa had been adhering to international aflatoxin safety standards for years, successfully exporting a wide variety of crops, increasingly stringent food safety standards in western countries pushed many smallholder farmers out of the market ? the new testing that was demanded of them was just too expensive. Fears grew that the new standards could cost African countries US$670 million in lost groundnut exports.

Mchinji National Smallholders Farmers? Association of Malawi (MASFAM), one of the farmer co-operatives under the umbrella of the National Small Farmers Association of Malawi ?(NASFAM), is just one group of farmers that was shut out of the groundnut export trade due to European Union trade aflatoxin regulations. But they have now come full circle. A new low-cost detection kit developed by the International Agriculture research Center for Semi-Arid Tropics ?(ICRISAT) has revitalized their business.

The kit has cut the cost of testing crops from US$25 to US$1 per sample, and has re-opened the doors to export. The simple kit can even be used by the most remote farmers to monitor grains and nuts for the presence of the toxin. In addition, ICRISAT has trained farmers in improved storage techniques to avoid contamination.

More than 4,000 MASFAM farmers are again exporting high-quality groundnuts to Europe under a fair trade agreement. Moses Siambi, an ICRISAT scientist based in Lilongwe, Malawi?s capital, is delighted. ?We?ve seen a very positive impact,? he said. ?Malawian groundnuts are now available in the biggest supermarkets in Britain.?

?According to Dr Farid Waliyar, ICRISAT West and Central African Director, ICRISAT is now transferring the Malawi experience to many other African countries. ?We have also developed solutions to minimize aflatoxin contamination pre-and post-harvest and we are seeking financial support to help scale-up these technologies,? he said.

NASFAM has successfully used the new aflatoxin detection kit as part of a broader effort to re-establish its European export market ?and many small farmer co-operatives across the continent could soon be following suit.

Hare trigger: Camera shoots rare striped rabbit

An elusive striped rabbit that has rarely been photographed has been caught on film deep in the forests of Sumatra, thanks to camera traps set up in an isolated mountain region of the Indonesian island.?

The Sumatra striped rabbit is not only extremely rare, it is also extremely shy, emerging from hiding only under the cover of darkness. The secretive, nocturnal creatures were snapped scooting across the crowded forest floor in two national parks in 2011.

"We were really excited as soon as we saw the rabbit photos because we knew that they were not photographed very often," said Jennifer McCarthy, a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and one of the researchers who oversaw the camera-trap project.

Research suggests the species is the rarest of the lagomorphs, the taxonomic order that includes rabbits, hares and pikas.

Despite the dark, grainy images, McCarthy recognized the rare, striped mammals almost immediately.

"With their unique coloring, they are pretty unmistakable," she told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

The rabbits are listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, an independent body that assesses the status of species around the globe. In 1996, the rabbits were listed as critically endangered; it's not clear what prompted the change.

The rabbits, known for their short ears and the distinctive wide, dark stripes that adorn their faces and bodies, live only in Sumatra. They have rarely been seen in the wild, and were photographed for the first time only in 1998, according to a statement from UMass Amherst.

McCarthy said the newly published photographs show that that there are at least a few of the animals living in two different national parks.

It's not clear if additional populations are lurking in other regions of the island, but the recent find should encourage local officials to protect the parks from development and human encroachment, McCarthy said.

Over the past six years, more than 3,000 people were lynched in Tanzania by frightened neighbors who thought they were witches, according to a new report from the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC).

Between 2005 and 2011, Tanzanians lynched an average of 500 people per year on suspicion of witchcraft, with most killings occurring in rural areas in the north of the country, according to the report obtained by Agence France-Presse.

"In Shinyanga province for example 242 people were killed because of local beliefs in witchcraft between January 2010 and January 2011 alone," the Legal and Human Rights Centre said in the report.

The LHRC explained that many victims were older women who had developed red eyes, which has long been considered a sign of witchcraft. Poor women in particular often develop red eyes as a result of burning cow dung for fuel as a substitute for firewood, researchers have found.

"Use of low quality biomass fuels like cow dung cause indoor pollution which is a hazard reflected in eyes turning red," gender consultant Rose Mgema told the InterPress Third World News Agency.

Ignas Mtana, a spokesman for police in northwest Tanzania, told IntrePress that women are often killed within a short period of time following the death of a relative. He said many families visit soothsayers to determine the cause of death and are often told that witchcraft is responsible.

Rural villagers driven by superstition have also murdered a great number of albinos in recent years due to a belief that making potions from their legs, hair, hands and blood can lead to great wealth, the BBC reported in a 2008 investigation.

The unmanned vehicle, called?Dragon, is built by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), and is the first commercial spacecraft ever launched toward the space station. During the rendezvous, the spacecraft approached within 1.6 miles (2.5 km) of the outpost. Dragon launched to orbit??from Cape Canaveral, Fla.,?early Tuesday (May 22) atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and is due to arrive at the station on Friday (May 25).

Today was a?final testing day for the capsule?before it can be cleared to attempt its first docking. The capsule performed a near flyby of the space station just as designed, without any mishap.

"Today is a really great day," NASA flight director Holly Ridings said during a briefing after the flyby. "It's been very, very successful up to this point."

Crewmembers inside the orbiting lab have been monitoring the vehicle's activities.

"We all look forward to it," space station Expedition 31 flight engineer Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency said this morning. "We will dedicate today to Dragon." [SpaceX's Historic Dragon Flight to Space Station]

The capsule successfully made its first burn to approach the space station at 3:58 a.m. EDT (0758 GMT), and followed with another engine firing at 4:43 a.m. EDT (0843 GMT) that took Dragon to a position 1.6 miles (2.5 km) below and 25 miles (40 km) behind the?International Space Station, officially beginning its flyby. At around 7:25 a.m. EDT (1125 GMT), Dragon made its closest approach, passing through the imaginary line called the R-bar connecting the station and Earth.

From this spot, cameras on the outpost searched for sightings of the approaching capsule.

"Dragon may or may not be visible," NASA commentator Josh Byerly said. "Dragon should be a small dot on the horizon."

Shortly before 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT), station astronauts sent instructions to Dragon to turn on a strobe light as a test to make sure the craft can respond to commands sent by the astronauts. Though the light was invisible to the crew, the spacecraft's systems indicated that the command was received and responded to.

"It's too far out and brightly illuminated to see the strobe light," Kuipers said.

The space station is a $100 billion orbiting research lab built by a coalition of five international space agencies, including NASA, the Russian Federal Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency.

During Thursday's flyby, Dragon tested its navigation and communications instruments, including a system called Relative GPS that uses the distance between the station and the capsule to determine Dragon's position in space. The vehicle will also tried out its "COTS Ultra-high frequency Communication Unit" to send signals to the space station.

As Dragon approached the station, the spacecraft was visible as a small bright dot in the distance.
