Silver nanoparticles may adversely affect environment

Thursday, February 28, 2013

In experiments mimicking a natural environment, Duke University researchers have demonstrated that the silver nanoparticles used in many consumer products can have an adverse effect on plants and microorganisms.

Fifty days after scientists applied a single low dose of silver nanoparticles, the experimental environments produced about a third less biomass in some plants and microbes.

These preliminary findings are important, the researchers said, because little is known about the environmental effects of silver nanoparticles, which are found in textiles, clothing, children's toys and pacifiers, disinfectants and toothpaste.

"No one really knows what the effects of these particles are in the environment," said Benjamin Colman, a post-doctoral fellow in Duke's biology department and a member of the Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEINT).

"We're trying to come up with the data that can be used to help regulators determine the risks to the environment from silver nanoparticle exposures," Colman said. CEINT's research is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency

Previous studies have involved high concentrations of the nanoparticles in a laboratory setting, which the researchers point out, doesn't represent "real-world" conditions.

"Results from laboratory studies are difficult to extrapolate to ecosystems, where exposures likely will be at low concentrations and there is a diversity of organisms," Colman said.

Silver nanoparticles are used in consumer products because they can kill bacteria, inhibiting unwanted odors. They work through a variety of mechanisms, including generating free radicals of oxygen which can cause DNA damage to microbial membranes without harming human cells.

The main route by which these particles enter the environment is as a by-product of sewage treatment plants. The nanoparticles are too small to be filtered out, so they and other materials end up in the resulting wastewater treatment "sludge," which is then spread on the land surface as a fertilizer.

For their studies, the researchers created mesocosms, which are small, man-made structures containing different plants and microorganisms meant to represent the environment. They applied sludge with low doses of silver nanoparticles in some of the mesocosms, then compared plants and microorganisms from treated and untreated mesocosms after 50 days.

The study appeared online Feb. 27 in the journal PLOS One.

The researchers found that one of the plants studied, a common annual grass known as Microstegium vimeneum, had 32 percent less biomass in the mesocosms treated with the nanoparticles. Microbes were also affected by the nanoparticles, Colman said. One enzyme associated with helping microbes deal with external stresses was 52 percent less active, while another enzyme that helps regulate processes within the cell was 27 percent less active. The overall biomass of the microbes was also 35 percent lower, he said.

"Our field studies show adverse responses of plants and microorganisms following a single low dose of silver nanoparticles applied by a sewage biosolid," Colman said. "An estimated 60 percent of the average 5.6 million tons of biosolids produced each year is applied to the land for various reasons, and this practice represents an important and understudied route of exposure of natural ecosystems to engineered nanoparticles."

"Our results show that silver nanoparticles in the biosolids, added at concentrations that would be expected, caused ecosystem-level impacts," Colman said. "Specifically, the nanoparticles led to an increase in nitrous oxide fluxes, changes in microbial community composition, biomass, and extracellular enzyme activity, as well as species-specific effects on the above-ground vegetation."

The researchers plan to continue to study longer-term effects of silver nanoparticles and to examine another ubiquitous nanoparticle ? titanium dioxide.

What does The Undertaker's return in Texas mean?

The Deadman rose again in Texas this past weekend.

To the shock of the assembled denizens of the WWE Universe, The Undertaker haunted WWE with his presence for the first time in nearly a year when he made his surprise return to the ring at a WWE Live Event in the Lone Star State. The Phenom?s appearance was somewhat unusual by his standards. He did not lay a solo challenge at the feet of any Superstars, but instead joined forces with former World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus in a tag team bout against Damien Sandow and Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett. It?s safe to say the presence of the former WWE Champion was a welcome sight to the assembled crowd, to say nothing of the outnumbered Sheamus. But The Undertaker?s return, awe-inspiring though it was, has still left the WWE Universe with more questions than answers.

For one, now that The Deadman has staked claim to his ?yard? once again with an appearance in a WWE ring, does that mean he is likely to repeat the feat on Raw anytime soon? The last time Undertaker appeared on WWE television was at Raw 1,000, where he aided his brother Kane in dispatching a squadron of unruly Superstars hell-bent on attacking The Big Red Monster. Triple H promised some months later at the 2012 Slammy Awards that the WWE Universe had not seen the last of The Phenom, and this appearance in Texas fulfilled The King of Kings? prophecy.

But it seems unlikely that this is all The Deadman has in store for the WWE Universe. Granted, a Superstar as mercurial and legendary as The Undertaker certainly has earned the clout to come and go as he pleases, and it is entirely possible that battling Barrett and Sandow was something he?d felt like doing for some time. But the WWE Universe should first remember that WrestleMania season is upon us and no one has yet to come forth to tempt fate by challenging The Undertaker?s 20-0 streak on The Grandest Stage of Them All. By this time last year (and in fact, the year before that), a challenger had already either emerged or been chosen by Undertaker himself. So perhaps The Deadman?s appearance in Texas was not so much an act of camaraderie toward Sheamus as a reminder to everyone else ? from Barrett and Sandow all the way on up to WWE Champion The Rock ? that he is still out there, waiting for a brave soul to step forward and test their worth in the shadow of New York City.

Triple H was right. The Undertaker has returned. For the WWE Universe, it is a blessing. For the WWE locker room, it could be a curse. It is a conundrum. It is a friendly reminder. It is a welcome sight and maybe, just maybe, it is an open challenge. Whether anyone responds appropriately is all that?s left to be seen.

Here are some tweets from Superstars and fans who were in attendance for The Deadman's return:

  • @RandyOrton: Got to watch Undertaker perform in Waco tonight at the #Smackdown live event. Very motivating to watch him do his thing. #Legend Killer
  • @RRWWE: Can't describe the feeling we all got here tonight in Waco, Texas after having The Undertaker compete. I legit got goosebumps!
  • @WadeBarrett: Hell of a night at #WWEWaco. Expect the unexpected...
  • @melissaashley08: Everyone was so confused when the lights went off. My first thought "JERICHO?!" Then... DING! "OMG!!!!" Lol
  • @ForeverASoldier: @WWESheamus I wish I could have been in Waco to see you & Undertaker team up!! Totally my dream tag-team! <3 So jealous right now.
  • @BillNWrestling: So Undertaker performed at a house show in Waco, TX last night.. Is he back? I hope so. Would be bummed to be at Mania without Deadman..
  • @Robot_Khan: OMG! Undertaker returned at Smackdown Live Event as he tag-teamed with Sheamus at Waco, Texas! Does this mean he's gonna be at WrestleMania?
  • @LethalLaserKJ: I still can't believe The Undertaker returned at a live event in Texas. That's so rad
  • @VinnyNovello: Undertaker is BACK!! he returned at a house show in Texas last night! I hope he's ready to go for WrestleMania 29 ! #hyped

John Legend can add real estate GOD to his long list of accomplishments -- the singer just unloaded his NYC condo for a whopping $775,000 PROFIT. Yeah, we said PROFIT.

Legend bought the 1,359-square-foot East Village pad for $1.9 million back in 2009.

Unfazed by the real estate market, Legend listed the crib a few months ago for $2.9 million -- and made out like a bandit ... selling for $2.675 million, according to docs.

The place is sweet too -- designed by primo designer Andres Escobar -- it's rockin' floor-to-ceiling glass walls, awesome NYC views, rooftop deck and swimming pool ... where his fianc?e Chrissy Teigen probably swam half-naked.

That sale price makes sense now.

We're live from MWC 2013 in Barcelona!

We've arrived in Catalonia's capital city, where snow, apparently, has marked the start of this year's Mobile World Congress. That's right, the hills surrounding this typically warm Mediterranean metropolis have been blanketed in a thin layer of flurries, but we're nonetheless optimistic about this week's smartphone show in Barcelona. As MWC 2013's massive new venue begins to take shape, we're preparing to deliver the hottest hands-ons, directly from Fira Gran Via. Some manufacturers, such as HTC and LG, have already demoed their latest handsets, and other devices have made an early debut, but there's plenty of excitement still to come, as you'll discover in our show preview. We'll be sharing our liveblog lineup in a few hours -- for now, it's time to bookmark our event page, and check back often throughout the next week.

Authorities think Chinese were behind cyberattack on Aspen Institute

Saturday, February 23, 2013

? The Aspen Institute is the latest U.S. organization to see some of its email accounts targeted in the purported wave of Chinese cyberattacks.

Three of the institute's estimated 350 email accounts were broken into, said Trent Nichols, director of information technology and services for the think-tank, which keeps its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and holds a strong presence in Aspen. The accounts belonged to high-ranking institute officials.

Nichols said institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson was one of the victims. He declined to identify the other two.

?Walter has made no secret about this,? Nichols said. ?His reaction was pretty much that anything he says is public knowledge, and he doesn't consider anything in his inbox privileged or confidential.?

The news was first reported Thursday night by the Huffington Post.

Jermaine Jackson changes last name to Jacksun

Reuters file

Jermaine Jackson, now Jacksun, in 2012.

By Reuters

Pop singer Jermaine Jackson officially has changed his name to Jermaine Jacksun for "artistic reasons," Los Angeles court officials said on Friday.?

The Jackson 5 member and older brother of pop stars Michael and Janet Jackson filed a petition to change his name in Los Angeles Superior Court in November 2012. The change became official on Wednesday after a hearing, a court spokeswoman said.

The 58-year-old singer, who is on tour in Europe with his three surviving brothers, Jackie, Marlon and Tito, did not attend.

"If Prince and P Diddy can do it, why can't and shouldn't Jermaine?" Jacksun's attorney, Bret D. Lewis, said when the petition originally was filed.

Jermaine Jackson unofficially adopted the name Mohammad Abdul Aziz after converting to Islam in 1989.

3 dead in high-speed gunfight in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A Maserati involved in a gunfight with an SUV on the Las Vegas Strip crashed into a taxi that that burst into flames, leaving three people dead and at least three injured early Thursday, police said.

The Maserati driver, the taxi driver and a passenger in the cab were killed. The SUV got away.

In all, five vehicles were involved in the dramatic crash around 4:30 a.m. Thursday at Flamingo and Las Vegas boulevards, a wide intersection surrounded by some of the most famous casinos on the Strip, including the Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the Paris.

It started with people in the Maserati and the SUV exchanging gunfire before the high-end sports car hit the taxi, said Sgt. John Sheahan. Three other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but the SUV was gone when police arrived, Sheahan said.

Several people were taken to the hospital, including a passenger from the Maserati. Four were taken to University Medical Center. Hospital spokeswoman Danita Cohen said three were treated and released, while one person remained in the hospital. Their condition was not released.

The intersection is expected to be closed for hours as officers investigate.

A tourist who witnessed the aftermath of the crash told KLAS-TV the burning taxi looked like a fireball.

More people may be hurt, Sheahan said.

It's the latest in a series of violent actions on the tourist corridor since the beginning of the year. Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay Feb. 16.

A spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Jeremy Handel, said his organization didn't immediately have a comment on the incident and deferred to the police unit that patrols the tourism district.

Japan's Cautious Hawks

This island is my island: the governor of Tokyo on Okinotori Island, May 2005. (Issei Kato / Courtesy Reuters)

The Japanese have thought about foreign policy in similar terms since the latter half of the nineteenth century. The men who came to power after the 1868 Meiji Restoration set out to design a grand strategy that would protect their country against the existential threat posed by Western imperialism. They were driven not, as their American contemporaries were, to achieve what they believed to be their manifest destiny nor, like the French, to spread wide the virtues of their civilization. The challenge they faced -- and met -- was to ensure Japan's survival in an international system created and dominated by more powerful countries.?

That quest for survival remains the hallmark of Japanese foreign policy today. Tokyo has sought to advance its interests not by defining the international agenda, propagating a particular ideology, or promoting its own vision of world order, the way the United States and other great powers have. Its approach has instead been to take its external environment as a given and then make pragmatic adjustments to keep in step with what the Japanese sometimes refer to as "the trends of the time."

Ever since World War II, that pragmatism has kept Japan in an alliance with the United States, enabling it to limit its military's role to self-defense. Now, however, as China grows ever stronger, as North Korea continues to build its nuclear weapons capability, and as the United States' economic woes have called into question the sustainability of American primacy in East Asia, the Japanese are revisiting their previous calculations. In particular, a growing chorus of voices on the right are advocating a more autonomous and assertive foreign policy, posing a serious challenge to the centrists, who have until recently shaped Japanese strategy...

Tunisian PM resigns amid growing political crisis

By Tarek Amara, Reuters

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali resigned on Tuesday after failing to replace a government pulled apart by acrimony between his Islamist allies and their secular opponents.

Str / EPA

Tunisia's Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali speaks as he announces his resignation during a news conference in Tunis, Tunisia, Feb. 19, 2013. Jebali resigned after his attempt to form a government of technocrats failed.

Jebali had threatened to quit if his plan for a non-partisan cabinet of technocrats to lead the north African country into early elections foundered.

In the end it was his own party, Ennahda, that rejected the proposal, prolonging the political stand-off that has cast a shadow over Tunisia's fledgling democracy and deepened an economic crisis.

"I vowed that if my initiative did not succeed, I would resign and ... I have already done so," Jebali told a news conference after meeting with President Moncef Marzouki.

Tunisia's deepest political crisis since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that toppled President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali began when leading secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid was gunned down outside his home in Tunis on Feb. 6.

No one claimed responsibility for the killing, but it deepened the misgivings of secularists who believe Jebali's government has failed to deal firmly enough with religious extremists threatening the country's stability.

Protesters poured onto the streets in the following days and Marzouki's secularist party threatened to quit the coalition government.

Jebali said he would try to form a cabinet of apolitical technocrats to restore calm and take Tunisia to elections, but did not consult his Ennahda allies or their secular coalition partners before making the proposal.

Several secular politicians backed the plan but Ennahda, winner of most parliamentary seats in elections that followed Ben Ali's overthrow, opposed the idea, fearing it would be sidelined from power.

Country in 'real trouble'
Jebali bet his own job on the outcome, saying he would quit if he was rebuffed, and lost.

He quits 15 months into the job, although political experts said Marzouki was likely to re-appoint him as caretaker premier before a new leader is appointed.

Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi has said he wants to see Jebali head a new coalition. President Marzouki was due to meet Ghannouchi on Wednesday to ask him to name a prime minister.

But Jebali, announcing his resignation late on Tuesday, said he would not lead another government without assurances on the timing of fresh elections and a new constitution.

No government would be viable without Ennahda's blessing given its strength in parliament.

Ghannouchi has said it is essential that Islamists and secular parties share power now and in the future, and that his party was willing to compromise over control of important ministries such as foreign affairs, justice and interior.

"Ennahda is in negotiations with political parties to form a national coalition government", said Fethi Ayadi, a senior Ennahda official.

Iyed Dahmani, a leader of the secular Republican Party, said some kind of agreement was vital.

"We are in real trouble, politically and economically," he said.

The crisis has disrupted efforts to revitalize an economy hit hard by the disorder that followed the overthrow of veteran strongman Ben Ali.

Tunisia has been negotiating with the International Monetary Fund for a $1.78 billion loan and politicians said Jebali's inability to re-establish a functioning government had slowed efforts to restore normality.

Credit rating service Standard and Poor's said on Tuesday it had lowered its long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit rating on Tunisia, citing "a risk that the political situation could deteriorate further amid a worsening fiscal, external and economic outlook."

SEATTLE (AP) ? The union for Boeing's technical workers is planning its next move after they rejected a contract offer, splitting with engineers represented by the same union who approved the deal.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace notified a federal mediator Wednesday to resume negotiations.

The union will survey members of the technical bargaining unit to determine their priorities, SPEEA said. They also voted Tuesday to authorize a strike, but a strike by the 7,400 technical workers is not imminent.

The 15,500 engineers who have a new four-year contract in place will play a supporting role in the talks.

The union had recommended rejection of the contract because it would not provide pensions to new employees. They would have a 401(k) retirement plan instead.

The Chicago-based aerospace company said the change was important to its future. The labor dispute continues as Boeing works to solve battery problems that have grounded its new 787s.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner said that the company was pleased with the engineers' vote but "deeply disappointed" in the technical workers' rejection of what he called the company's "best and final" offer.

"The realities of the market require us to make changes so we can invest in new products and keep winning in this competitive environment," Conner said in his statement.

"That's why our proposal to move future hires to an enhanced 401(k)-style retirement plan is so important, as we have repeatedly emphasized over the course of these negotiations."

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said he's concerned about the split vote and spoke to union and Boeing representatives, urging them to resume negotiations.

"We cannot overstate the importance of the aerospace industry to the economy of Washington," Inslee said in a statement. "There are more than 131,000 employees in aerospace-related companies working across the state, the vast majority of which are directly reliant on the Boeing Company."

The union's nearly 23,000 employees are mostly in the Puget Sound region.

The factory-floor assembly work is done by the members of the International Association of Machinists. The Machinists approved a new, four-year contract in December 2011.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Daily iPhone App: Hackycat makes kicking the cat fun

Stick with me on this: Hackycat is basically a game about kicking cats. In real life, of course, I love cats, and would never want to kick one. But Hackycat, designed by a very talented artist named Ken Wong, is all about playing hackeysack with a bevy of cartoony, colorful and surprisingly serene cats, kicking them in mid-air by tapping on your iPhone's screen to keep them up ... and letting them grab cheeseburgers along the way.

Yes, as you might have figured already, Hackycat is a silly game, but it is a lot of fun. The gameplay itself is relatively simple, as all you'll need to do is tap the screen to keep the cats bouncing where you want them to go. If any of them falls to the bottom of the screen (or if you hit a bird bomb as it flies by), it's game over.

The game's progression system is very well-designed, however: as you collect cheeseburgers, you can use them as currency to unlock more cats to play with, open up new heroes or powerups, or help yourself to completing certain goals. And since the game uses Wong's great art, all of the designs are very slick and fun.

Hackycat is not extremely complicated, but then again that's part of the charm. It's a solid game with an unlock system that will keep you playing for quite a while if you want to open up everything. You can grab a universal version on the App Store now for just US$0.99.

My GF's son-who is going to school in PA-borrowed a room-mate's car to drive home and surprise his GF for Valentine's Day. The car he drove is a decked-out ricer...heavy tint on the windows, loud blatty muffler, NO2 system, and neon blue wheels. While traveling through VA, he was pulled over by a State Trooper-he was not speeding-and given three tickets. One ticket was for the level of tint-which was illegal in VA, but not Missouri where his roomie is from, one for the muffler-again, illegal in VA but not MO, and having a radar detector-which is illegal in VA. I can understand getting the ticket for the radar detector, but don't see the reason why he got tickets for the windows and muffler. Especially since he was just driving through the state and the car was not his, and that all these things are legal in MO where the car is from. Like I said earlier, he was not speeding, and was not operating the car in any fashion that would be considered reckless. One good thing is that the AH Trooper didn't notice the NO2 buttons, and if he had, he'd have gotten ticketed for that as well...again, that is legal in MO but not in VA.
My questions are as follows:
Was it legal for the Trooper to ticket him for the tint and muffler since those items are legal in the state where the car is registered?
Do these infractions carry any points violations, or do they only carry a fine?
Is it worth him taking a day off from school to come fight the tickets? The total fine for all three is $181.00-including a BS "processing fee" of $51.00.
If he does not pay the fines, is there any danger of him losing his license? I know both VA and SC(where he resides)are part of the Driver's License Compact and report traffic violations to one another. If the fines do not get paid, will a SC Trooper knock on his door one day or arrest him on a VA bench warrant if he were to get pulled over?
He's a starving student, and doesn't have that kind of money right now. It's a damn shame that he was made an example of...especially since it wasn't even his car. I know this kid, and you could not hope to meet a nicer and more respectful young man.
Note to self...stay the hell out of VA.

General terms:

a. He is the Captain of the 'ship'.

b. He can ask his friend to have the tint removed and show proof to the Court.

c. He may be able to do community service in lieu of a fine.

d. VA will not be interested in what MO does or does not do.

e. I don't hear any legal defense.

f. If he FTA's, VA may suspend his operating privelage and notify MO who will/may suspend his DL, which means he will have to get a clearance letter from VA and do whatever is required to be reinstated in MO.

g. Go the website AVVO and ask your legal question there, than you will have a bonafide answer.

Pat the tickets. Had a buddy in college in SC who forgot to pay a Florida ticket. Next time he tried to renew his license, it had been suspended! Paid the Florida ticket and got his license back but it was a hassle.

Dark tint and loud pipes are illigal in most states. In Ma. they usually look the other way on the pipes IF you are not trying to make noise. The tint is pretty strictly enforced. Personally I find it a lot safer at an intersection when I can make eye contact and know the other guy is looking, even if I have the right of way.

You need to obey the law everywhere you are regardless of what it is elsewhere. I suspect you will find that the tickets are valid regardless of MO law.

This is NOT the answer.

This is NOT the answer.

Sure it is.

Some laws say "shall not operate on the highways of...", some say "shall not be registered in..."

Whether your tint or muffler is legal will depend on how the laws in the state you are in are written.

In Missouri tinting of the driver or passenger side windows is limited to no less than 35%, no additional tinting allowed on the windshield. Unless you have a medical permit for darker.
Virginia allows no less than 50%.
If the MO tint on that car is at the legal limit, how did the trooper determine it was too dark?

I suspect the window tint and exhaust were both non-factory items. I would not expect a driver to be ticketed for having factory-standard items installed on a car. Once somebody starts putting after-market stuff on a car, different story.

Well i can tell you for sure because i went through this a couple of years ago that the cop shouldn't have wrote him for the windows. I got myself a lawyer and it was addressed under the interstate commerce act. Needless to say i won. Sure it would have been cheaper to just pay the fines but i am not one to give in if i think i am right regardless of the cost.

Edit.
My windows probably were not as dark as i am thinking a kids car would be.

Unless it has changed
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN VIRGINIA? Virginia Window Tint Law
Virginia Tint Law Enacted: 1999

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Virginia, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
? Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
? Front Side Windows Must allow more than 50% of light in.
? Back Side Windows Must allow more than 35% of light in.
? Rear Window Must allow more than 35% of light in.
