A North Carolina movie director, who operated several staffing companies, is going to federal prison for 12 years. Greg Harrison failed to pay more than $40 million dollars in federal payroll taxes withheld from his employees? pay from 2004-2006 and 2009, and committed other crimes.
In the late 1980s, Harrison bought a staffing company that eventually expanded to a dozen states. As his business grew, Harrison used payroll taxes collected from his employees to finance films, other businesses, and a high-income personal lifestyle.
After an IRS investigation, Harrison was charged and convicted on 63-counts of payroll tax fraud and failure to file individual income tax returns. Trial evidence showed Harrison lied to IRS auditors by creating fraudulent bank statements to show the payroll taxes had been paid. He also gave IRS auditors a false tax ID number to show his mother, and not Harrison, owed the businesses.
In addition to prison time, Harrison must repay over $43 million in restitution.
