Will a Car Cover Prevent Car Theft?

I've been a very faithful car cover user since the late 70's when I had my screaming yellow Opel GT. Do you remember that little car? It didn't have much go power, but it was fun.

In 1991 I had the misfortune of having my Porsche 944 Turbo liberated from my ownership while parked in front of a hotel. You can imagine the feeling that came over me in the morning when I was ready to get in my car and go about my business. "Hmm, I thought I parked it right here!" Wouldn't you know it that it was one of the very rare times I didn't put the cover on my car when I parked it. Damn!

You?ve probably heard the old saying ?Out of sight, out of mind,? and I can tell you from my own experience that it's quite true. According to the top names in car covers, Covercraft and Coverking, keeping your car under wraps keeps most would-be thieves away. Both companies say their products offer a benefit, but which type of car cover works the best? According to AutoAnything it must be a custom-fit cover designed for outdoor use that incorporates a lock. Auto Parts Warehouse offers similar recommendations.

The auto insurance industry also claims that, when used with a lock, a car cover can be a very effective theft deterrent. Unless a thief has a paying customer in mind for your particular make, model, color and year vehicle, it is highly unlikely that they will take the time to lift the cover to see what is inside. The reason for this is nothing less than the time involved to pull the cover back. To a car thief, every second is crucial. A professional car thief knows he has only a matter of two or three minutes to get in, disable the alarm, start the vehicle, and be on his way.

As you can imagine, not all car covers are created equal when it comes to theft deterrence. There is a big difference between an indoor cover and an outdoor cover, for example. Custom-fit versus ready-fit makes a big difference, too.

Indoor covers are very light weight, and may have only one or two layers of fabric. They are not meant for outdoor use. Their real purpose is protecting a vehicle from dust and accidental rubbing while it?s stored inside a garage. It?s not very much deterrence.

Outdoor covers are designed to protect your vehicle from harsh weather and the environment. They will be constructed using three to five layers of sturdy, woven and non-woven synthetic fabrics. It can be cut with a sharp knife, but it will take time and effort.

In addition to their inside versus outside fabric and construction methods, car covers are available as ready-fit and custom-fit. There is a world of difference between the two.

Ready-fit means that the cover is basically the correct size and shape to fit over your vehicle. It?s like a large, canvass bag. It gets the basic job done, protecting your car from the weather, but there are a lot of limitations. Specifically, the loose fit means it will flap around allowing both the weather and a thief to get inside pretty easily. Also, without a tight fit, the material will rub on your car?s fine finish, eventually causing wear.

A custom-fit car cover is cut and sewn from a custom pattern for your vehicle. It fits like a glove. Every small detail is taken car of, from mirror pockets to elastic around the bottom that pulls it in snug and tight. It will also have locking grommets sewn-in and reinforced allowing a locking cable to be used. Simply put, it?s too much effort for most thieves. Uncovered cars are plentiful and easier prey.
