Isabelle Ameganvi, a Togolese opposition leader, is calling on women to go on a sex strike for a full week to demand the freedom of protesters detained ahead of elections in Togo.

According to Togolese human rights groups, police arrested about 120 opposition supporters, who took to the streets in the capital Lome for weeks to protest against new electoral reforms they believe to support the side of the ruling party.

The Togolese opposition leader called for the sex strike starting from Monday, urging Togolese women to refuse having sex with their husbands for a week as a militant act to mobilize people against the ruling party.

?I am inviting all women to observe a one-week sex strike, fasting and prayers to set our arrested brothers and husbands free,? said Isabelle Ameganvi, leader of the opposition Let?s Save Togo.

The leader continued, as reported on CNN, ?So all you ladies have to keep the gate of your ?motherland? locked up to all men from Monday through to Sunday.? She went on to say ?We cannot stay hand-crossed, as our children and husbands are being kept in jail.?

A sex strike known also as sex boycott is a non violent way to protest many political issues from abstaining from sex with the other partner.

In October 1997, the chief of the military of Colombia, General Ma?uel Bonnet publicly called for a sex strike among the wives and girlfriends of the Colombian left-wing guerrillas as part of strategy to achieve cease-fire.

In the Philippines, during the summer of 2011, women in rural Mindanao imposed a several week long sex strike in an attempt to end fighting between their two villages.
