Hobo With a Shotgun | Arts and Entertainment Network

New movie release, ?Hobo with a Shotgun,? is not only a nice new contribution to the genre of pulp film, but is also a winner of the Grindhouse Movie Trailer Contest, as well as a YouTube smash hit. This movie picture just debuted in the Park City at Midnight part of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Fans are going to love new movie ?Hobo with a Shotgun.? This is also the debut of Jason Eisener?s directorial career and John Davies writing career. They?re both clever and creative and offer the promise of new and bloody additions to the trash cinema niche.

It?s even more exciting that the star of ?Hobo with a Shotgun? is Rutger Hauer, an ?80s actor who starred in the classic ?The Hitcher? and many more films. Eisener and Davies have now introduced him to a new generation of horror movie fans. In this one of the movies playing now, Hauer plays a ratty looking homeless hero who decides to start his own vendetta against a crime boss with nothing more than his shotgun.

There?s plenty of pulpy gore and loads of gunfire in this upcoming movie. It may be Magnet Releasing?s best performer this year, the niche section of Magnolia Pictures, when it hits arts cinemas and on-demand on TVs this coming spring. There won?t be a lot of crossover business, even with Hauer at the movie?s helm, but there will be enough genre fans turning out to see it to make it a big hit on the B-movie?s list.

Hauer plays a good natured homeless guy who jumps off a freight train, all the while thinking of improving his new home and making a little extra money mowing lawns with a used lawnmower. Brian Downey plays Drake, the crime boss of the city, and along with his two sons, both thugs, played by Gregory Smith (Slick) and Nick Bateman (Ivan), they try to get rid of the hobo by throwing him on a garbage dump. But Hauer intends to stay where he is so he teams up with Abby, played by a pretty Molly Dunsworth, and he goes after his tormenters with a vengeance. The result is a bloody mess and a lot of fun.
Hauer, is courageous and a little off kilter in his role. Try to imagine Nicholas Cage playing a combination of his roles in ?Kick-Ass,? and ?Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,? and you?ll get an idea of what Hauer is like in this film. He?s become best known for his recent role in ?Batman Begins.? Hauer?s grizzled look and big belly are perfect for his role in this new film.
Dunsworth is new to films and brings the movie a welcome sexiness as Hauer?s long-legged love interest. Brian Downey, Gregory Smith, and Nick Bateman provide the bloodiest scenes in the film.
This movie is Eisener?s follow up to ?Treevenge? a Sundance short. It?s a comedic look at Christmas Trees. Eisener really plays up his low budget here and brings the audience from laughter to shrieks. The Cinematographer of the film, Karim Hussain, Sarah Dunsworth, the costume Designer, and Ewen Dickson, the Production Designer, all give the film, in its Nova Scotia locations, the essence of a Roger Corman film from the ?70s,

The movie isn?t going to pull in many viewers other than those who love B-movies, regardless of the fact that Hauer is the star. There just isn?t a strong enough supporting cast. Yet, the social media made this film a sensation on the Internet and it may make the feature a big grossing film for magnet. Fans of this genre of movies are used to seeing studios dilute this type of movie so that it?ll appeal to a broader audience. This is not the case with Hobo. It?s a real trash movie and will appeal to fans of this type of movie. This is not something that happens a lot.
