Final Draft comes to the iPad ? sort of ?

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Screenwriters all over the industry have been wanting Final Draft to come to their mobile devices, and up until now, they?ve had to rely on writing on the fly with other apps like Celtx and ScriptWrite. Then, they would have to export the story and import it into their Final Draft Desktop utility. So, when after 3 years, Final Draft announced that they would be releasing their down Final Draft app for iPad on February 16th, Hollywood began to rejoice. But before they could pop the corks on the literary champagne, word got around that Final Draft for iPad wasn?t a screen writing app at all, just a reader.

?In order to integrate with future Final Draft products, we?ve redefined the development roadmap of our Final Draft Mobile app?The Final Draft Mobile app for iOS will augment the overall Final Draft user experience, providing our community a seamless creative work flow between the Final Draft desktop client, Final Draft Mobile, and future Final Draft services.? ? from the original Final Draft Mobile Announcement

That?s right Final Draft Reader is probably more useful for an actor than it is for a screenwriter. It has absolutely no writing capability whatsoever, so writers will still have to look elsewhere to appease their muse while on the go. Then again, have you ever tried to write a script on an iPad? Not exactly the easiest experience in the world. Writing on an iPhone ? for all it?s thumb hunting and pecking ? is easier to a point, but you still have to deal with tiny virtual keyboard buttons and perhaps spend more time rewriting words than writing them. But certainly good enough to get an idea down so you don?t lose it to the cerebral ether. So, from a writer?s perspective, perhaps Final Draft is onto something.

??Like no other mobile scriptwriting app available, the Final Draft Reader app displays Final Draft? scripts on your iPad exactly as they appear on your desktop ? perfectly paginated to industry standards. You can effortlessly import your Final Draft version 8 scripts into the Final Draft Reader app to read and annotate anywhere, anytime.?

Final Draft Reader?s strength is in formatting. It says that FD8 scripts imported directly into the app appear perfectly formatted and look exactly the same as their desktop variants (right on down to color coded pages, nonetheless). In addition to reading, scripts can be annotated. That?s very beneficial to producers and directors who are on location or deep into another project and just want to read the changes, give notes and then shoot them back via email.

But in the end, that?s all it does. As a writer, I still prefer Celtx anyway. It?s far more powerful and as intuitive to the writer. And from a production perspective, the desktop version offers powerful script breakdown and report features which keep a production running right along. And mobile Celtx actually allows you to write something then shoot it back to your desktop with no loss in formatting. In fact, I probably write more on my iPhone these days than I do on my desktop (except when I?m doing pre-production stuff). The only thing I don? like is that it doesn?t have all the formats that the desktop version does.

So while, it?s disappointing that Final Cut isn?t providing writers with another arrow in the mobile quiver to create and share, it does represent a step forward.? But make no mistake, Final Draft has dropped the ball, in my opinion. A reader isn?t all that difficult to release and mobile devices can view PDF files natively. Sure you have the annotation feature. But that?s it? After three years? Now sure, Final Draft can come up with an FD mobile app that?s actually userful. But the question is, WILL THEY?

The wait continues.
